Frequently Asked Questions

What is fetchvid?

fetchvid is a free, browser-based video downloader that turns YouTube, YouTube Shorts, Instagram (posts and Reels), TikTok and X (Twitter) links into MP4 video or M4A audio files. Paste a link, pick a quality, and your browser starts the download as soon as the file is ready. No app or account is needed.

Paste a link to a YouTube video you have permission to download. Choose an available quality; your browser downloads the file when it is ready.

Is fetchvid free? Do I need an account?

fetchvid is free and does not ask for an account, an email address or an app install. To keep downloads fast for everyone, the number of simultaneous downloads per person is limited; start a new one when the current one finishes.

Which quality and format can I download?

Videos are prepared as MP4 in the qualities the source offers, up to 1080p (Full HD); for vertical videos the short side counts. 4K and higher are not offered. At the same resolution an H.264 stream is preferred, so the file plays on phones, computers and smart TVs without extra software.

Can I download only the audio (MP3)?

Yes. The audio-only option in the quality list gives you an M4A (AAC) file. fetchvid does not convert to MP3; M4A plays natively on iPhone, Android, Windows and macOS. Audio-only is not offered for live streams.

Does fetchvid work on phones, and where is the file saved?

fetchvid works without an app in current browsers (Safari, Chrome, Edge, Firefox) on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows and macOS. The file goes to your browser's download folder: Downloads in the Files app on iPhone and iPad, the Download folder on Android, and your browser's download location on a computer.

Why is downloading slow?

File size, network speed and source delivery affect download time; a GPU cannot speed up network transfer.

Why can't a video be downloaded?

Private, deleted, age-restricted, region-locked or sign-in-only videos cannot be retrieved, and DRM-protected content (paid films, music services) is not supported. Videos longer than 120 minutes are not processed. If the platform temporarily asks for verification, trying again a few minutes later usually helps.

Can I record live streams?

Paste the link of a live stream that is currently running and choose a quality to start recording; when you stop the recording, it is prepared and downloaded as MP4. One recording can last up to 2 hours. Streams that have not started yet cannot be recorded.

Are my videos and links stored?

No. A prepared file stays on the server only so you can download it: it is deleted automatically about a minute after your browser starts the download, or within 10 minutes at the latest if it is never downloaded. Video links are not sent to analytics, and no user account or download history is created.

Is downloading videos legal?

It depends on the owner, the licence and the law in your country. Use fetchvid only for content you have the right to download: your own videos, content whose owner allows it, or openly licensed (e.g. Creative Commons) videos. Following each platform's terms of use is the user's responsibility.
